Breakfast, brunch, lunch, linner, dinner, snack, midnight snack, midday snack … you’ve got a craving, the many sandwich spots in Buffalo Niagara have an answer
A Sad But True Tale of Amatuer Sandwich Making
You open your fridge and that tiny gust of cold air hits your skin. It doesn’t repulse you or cause you to close the door. On the contrary, it gets you pumped! You grab that fresh iceberg lettuce you got from the co-op, and you grab that sourdough bread in the back of the fridge so it doesn’t mold and look like a tiny civilization is living on top of it. You got fresh baby tomatoes from the farmers market you’ve been saving for this very occasion, and you grab an assortment of cold cuts, roast beef, ham, and some salami. You put it all on the counter like a prize showcase because you know it’s time to make a sandwich!
You meticulously put everything in your desired order like you’re a master craftsman designing a Swiss watch. The bread is toasted to the point that it’s golden brown. The tomatoes are in thin slices just like the iceberg lettuce. The assortment of cold cuts is piled high, but they’re all about the same height and width. You pile it all on one piece of bread and then sit back for a full forty seconds admiring your work “damn, this is going to taste so good!” You proudly say to yourself as you smash the last piece of golden brown bread down and hear that wonderful sound of completion. CRUNCH!
Then you pick up this beautiful monster with both hands. You’re careful not to spill even a crumb as it inches closer and closer to your mouth. Then finally it happens… you take the first bite. Instead of a sudden whirlwind of bliss and excitement, all you get is the feeling of meh. Was it because you didn’t add any condiments? Would spicy mustard or Thousand Island dressing really of made a difference? You keep racking your brain until you finally begrudgingly come to the conclusion that you always forget as soon as the urge to make another sandwich hits you. You’re just not good at making sandwiches.
It’s a bitter pill to swallow but a pill that a great many swallow as well. Luckily for everyone suffering from this ailment there are many places that do know how to make first-class sandwiches, so you don’t have to wallow in disappointment every time you make one. With that in mind, how about we discuss some good sandwiches in Buffalo Niagara?
The Hangover sandwich at Joe’s Deli: hot capicola, fried egg, sautéed onions, cherry peppers, and melted provolone, topped with lettuce, tomato, and mayo on a toasted Costanzo’s hard roll.
Leave it to the Sandwich Pros at Joe’s
First off, it’s all about selection, and a good sandwich spot in the Buffalo area should have a great selection (this is the birthplace of the world-famous Beef-on-Weck, after all). You want to find a place where every time you go you can try something new. It’s not tiny cosmetic changes either like sourdough instead of a Kaiser roll on the beef (who in their right mind would do that anyway). No, you won’t entirely have new sandwich creations at your fingertips. That’s why when I want to absolutely destroy a sandwich; I go to Joe’s Deli.
Joe’s Deli isn’t some big swanky throwback of a place. It essentially is what the big sign on the store says… a Deli, and a spotless and tidy one at that (I’m no sanitation inspector, but A+ well done). There’s a big board in the front telling you all the different sandwiches available along with the soups of the day. There are an assortment of chips and sweets sprinkled all throughout the counter area. Think a very nice local deli without waiting in line for your number to be called while the lady in front keeps asking for her ham to be cut so thin it’s practically invisible). And the service? Extremely friendly. Not unsettling so, but it’s the type of place where if they had designated waiters and waitresses you’d tip well (or at least I hope you would. Do you know how hard it is to maintain a living in the restaurant business? Let me put it this way: it’s so hard I had to start writing blogs).
Most importantly, the sandwiches are simply dynamite. My go-to at the moment is the I Love Josie, Oven-roasted turkey with cranberry mayo, stuffing, and Muenster cheese on grilled sourdough. Tell me that doesn’t sound good. It’s like having a thanksgiving dinner in a sandwich, and it comes with a side of their homemade potato chips or French fries, and one big old pickle. So it’s fair to say you get a pretty sizable meal whatever your choice is. I’m not going to list all the different sandwiches they have available on the menu (that’s called killing space, and that’s what lazy writers do. I’m a fill in the blank writer. Just please be kind. If I find out you guys filled out this part with mean words, I promise the next piece will be written in tears). But you best believe everything is fresh and everything is oh so delicious!
The must-try Stretchmark Sandwich from La Verdad Cafe: house-smoked brisket topped with Kale Apple Slaw, Benzinger Gouda Mac & Cheese, and their bourbon BBQ sauce
Don’t Settle for Mediocre Snackage
Next time it’s getting a little late and your stomach starts to growl a little bit like an alert, and you slowly make your way to the fridge… stop yourself because you are only setting yourself up for another disappointment. Look, it’s ok that you can’t make a decent sandwich (remember, acceptance is the first step). That’s why places like Joe’s Deli exist so you can focus on other things like doing your laundry or watching The Office reruns. If you’re up to it, watching The Office reruns while doing your laundry. So go out there and find your sandwich shop or go to Joe’s Deli (I won’t be mad if you brag to your friends about how you love it there even though you’ve only seen it in passing until you read this article). The most important thing is that you find the sandwich spots in Buffalo Niagara that makes you happy and satisfied!
