If you find yourself Happy Gilmore-ing your way across the golf course, it’s probably time to build some chops at a driving range

Do You Suck at Golf? Join the Club & Hit the Range

So you want to be a regular Arnold Palmer? Hitting every single ball with such precision, people think you’re some kind of Gulf Guru? The problem is the only thing you have in common with Arnold Palmer is that you both like to drink the beverage of the same name. Your game, on the other hand, is terrible. Precision? Your so bad you think a hole in one is a horrible word that sends little old ladies and children running, screaming, and yelling because you never get one. Every time you go to the golf course, you look forward more to riding the cart than getting out there and hitting the ball. When your friends ask you to come with them to play a couple of holes, you always fake some new ailment. “Oh, I have a dreadful headache; I can’t today.” “Oh I hurt my hand closing the door too hard yesterday I couldn’t possibly golf today;” and so it goes.

There’s no easy way to say this, but you, my friend, are in a rut, and the only way to get out of a rut is through practice. You’re going to have to head to the driving range and tighten up your game. I’m going to hit you with another hard truth to chew on (make sure to use your back teeth though hard truths tend to be rather hard). You are not going to be the next Tiger Woods no matter how hard you hit the driving range, but if you remain consistent with your practice, I promise when you hit the course you can crack open that Arnold Palmer with pride because you know you put the work in and it’ll just be a matter of showing people how much you’ve improved.

If you’re looking for driving ranges in the Buffalo Niagara area so you can vastly improve your game, you’ve come to the right place. So how about we get started?

You’ve Got to Be Choosy

Don’t be fooled into thinking all driving ranges are created equal because they’re not. Some may have taller grass requiring you to put that extra bit of twerk in your swing to send the ball where you’d like it to go. Some can have hills that make you have to calculate distance. However, there are different aspects to every range. In the grand scheme of things, they’re not that important. Are you training for the masters and have to familiarize yourself with all different types of terrain in order to win the big prize? Of course not, so just find whatever range is most convenient/comfortable for you and get to swinging.

Again, and I can’t stress this enough, it all comes down to practice; but there is such a thing as overdoing it. Golf in many circles is a status symbol game. “I can hit this ball from deep in the green and still get a hole in one,” you might hear someone smugly proclaim while you’re out on the course. People do tend to get wrapped up in it, but golf is also by nature a solitary leisure game where you take your time, try to plan your strokes, and work on your technique. It may be tough but try to find a middle ground for yourself between recently retired elderly person sauntering on to the range in the wee hours of the morning when no ones around to practice your game meticulously, and young Tiger Woods on the warpath hitting the ball with such intent you’d think it might explode as soon as it makes contact with the club.

Casual Fun

On the rare occasion I go to the driving range to practice my game (it’s always going to be awful, and I’ve accepted that), I like going to The Broadway Driving Range & Miniature Golf. Not for some grand reason or anything like that; I don’t even have a favorite part of the range, to be honest. I just like the atmosphere. You’ve got kids having fun playing putt-putt on one part, then you’ve got people swinging away on another. I just like the juxtaposition, the sense that on one side kids are playing only for fun and not worrying about anything else. On the other side you’ve got those looking for improvement as well as fun. Tempers don’t flare up in this place. No one angrily throws his or her golf club in a vulgar swearing fit. It’s just people who want to improve and have a good time while doing it.

Level Up Your Game

If you take a moment to think about it, golf is a unique sport. It’s one of a few sports like boxing where the skill and, by extension, the possible achievements are all up to the individual holding the club. There’s no one to pass the club to (with the exception of the caddy) when you miss a shot. You can’t call a time-out and discuss strategy with teammates. It’s just you (and the water boy and caddy, if you’re rich). No one else, thus it falls upon you to train yourself. Sure, you could invest the money in yourself and get a trainer if you want to get deathly serious about the game but, is that necessary? If you’re golfing for your own enjoyment, head out to the range and do just that. Go out on the range and golf until you can see visible improvement, because golf is like anything else in this world. If you want to learn how to do it, you practice and if you want to get better, you practice even more. You’ve got to put that work in so you can show everyone what kind of work you got out.

I hope at the very least, if you’re looking to improve your golf game, you’ll at least consider going to a driving range the next time your friends ask you — whether for fun or just to crush your friends. The driving range is a great place to learn fundamentals, work out some kinks, and last but not least, have fun.
