Continuing a Tradition

Nowadays, the world seems so automated. Anything authentic or natural seems to be trumped for the sheer sake of convenience, and nowhere is this more prevalent than your local supermarket. Yes, indeed, having an abundance of food ready to be plucked or carried into your cart with extreme ease is nothing short of a triumph for all humanity. But with all this abundance of convenience inevitably, there’s a trade-off. Where’s the connection? Meaning where’s the bond (no matter how small) between the person who tended the field, took care of the soil, and patiently waited as all his or her hard work eventually sprouted out of the ground and was ultimately brought to be sold with pride to a grateful customer? In your local supermarket, you miss that, with all the options in front of you, it’s essentially just an endless supply of products, and let’s be honest, “your local supermarket” is never really local. If you want an authentic local grocery shopping experience where you can put a real honest to goodness face to the products your buying, then you’ll have to go to a Farmers Market. My Farmers Market of choice is The Elmwood Village Farmers Market. I appreciate it more than anything for the simple fact that just by me walking to the market, I’m cutting through a lot of the fat that comes with shopping at a supermarket chain. There isn’t a sense the food I see before me is a result of a hodgepodge of different vendors across the country or, in a grander view, the entire world. When I step through that door, I know for a fact that this is all homegrown or handmade (or at least regionally grown, but who likes semantics?). It’s something about the smell of the place that puts me in a sort of blissful trance, filled with appreciation because I understand that someone had to wake up early and use their hands to provide pretty much everything in sight.

There’s a real sense of authenticity in a Farmers Market as well. It took months to grow these items. They aren’t just things developed in a lab somewhere and then hit with countless sprays or whatnots to preserve taste, color, texture, etc. For all intents and purposes, what you see is what you get, and with a world getting more and more comfortable with fabrication by the day, that’s a relief. So when I drop my hard earned cash on the counter for a bushel of apples or some greens or whatever I might fancy in that particular moment, I’m happy to do so because I know that the food wasn’t explicitly grown for me, but rather it’s for us, and I’m glad to support and show my gratitude for the hard work that’s been put in.

No Veggies, No Peace

There is a saying: “No Farms, No Food.” A Farmers Market, if you think about it, really is the last bastion for the American farmers to truly have his or her work appreciated. Since humans have been on earth, farmers have been an essential part of their communities. In many cases, during the early days of civilization, the farmers and their crops were the main reason people remained alive. They were held in high esteem, and rightfully so. But as time progressed and technology improved, the farmer’s role as an essential provider for the community dwindled until the point they were relegated to the background altogether.

Yet what the farmers market provides as a residual effect of just being there is that it puts the farmer’s importance in full view for all to see. People often forget, but farmers are the unsung heroes of the food industry. Their jobs are all year ‘round in some capacity, and they work grueling hours that go way beyond your typical 9 to 5, and they rarely, if ever, get truly recognized for these tasks, which they accomplish day after day.

Supporting a local farmers market in Buffalo Niagara is like saying “I see you” to all that worked the field and eventually brought the food to your plate. Spending money at your local Farmers Market puts it right in the same hands that grew that corn you love, or the squash you make wonderful soup with, or the tomatoes you like to put in your salad. There’s no middle man, and then the overhead is relatively inexpensive, so you can rest assured that what you give will find its way directly to the person responsible for the things you love so they can keep providing them. Keeping your dollars local will always be the best way to spend them.

The Farmers Market as a concept is simultaneously simple but rich with history and utter importance. When you purchase something from there, it’s as if you’re partaking in a more modern version of how the world used to work. It’s good to know that there’s still a place where honesty and hard work are fundamental tenets of your grocery shopping experience.

So, if all the self-service doodads at your supermarket make you feel like an overly polite robot is servicing you, and the aisle upon aisles of products you have at your fingertips are just springing blank nameless faces in your mind upon purchase, why not give a local Buffalo Niagara farmers market a try?
