Discover some Buffalo Niagara fall fun
The Fall Essentials
If the myriad of different colored leaves hitting the ground and the subtle crunch under your foot as you walk on top of them didn’t give it away, fall is officially amongst us! And with that comes a host of fun seasonal activities that’ll have you enjoying and appreciating the season and its beauty that much more. So how about we spotlight some of the fun activities available this fall in the Buffalo Niagara area?
Apple Picking
Blackman’s Homestead Farm is a great place to pick apples
What could be more relaxing and downright joyous than picking some apples fresh off the tree? Fall is the perfect time of year for such a thing, and Blackman’s Homestead Farm is a great place to take care of all your apple picking needs thanks to their U- Pick fruit business. What’s that, you ask? Time for a bit of an informative history lesson (which I just realized upon writing it that “an informative history lesson” is a bit of an oxymoron, but semantics be damned). “In 1971, Robert and Margaret Blackman went out on a limb and started their U-Pick fruit business inviting customers to the farm to handpick their own apples. For 50 years, families have been coming to spend a day at the farm and take in the landscape of the Niagara Escarpment.” Blackman’s is like your normal apple picking farm mid-September early November. People are allowed free reign to pick apples until their heart’s content (of course, there are rules and limits once you get off of the farm, don’t expect to appear with an empty barrel and have it filled by the time you leave. You’ll only get a polite “no way” possibly followed by some equally polite snickers due to the nature of the ludicrous situation). But as long as you’re within reason and respect the rules of the farm, have at it!
They even have an apple picking schedule on their website, so you know what exact apples are available at the moment (I mean, in my eyes, an apple is an apple. As long as it doesn’t look like it came back from a recent tour of duty or have a worm with a top hat using it as a place of residents, I’m happy, but for those that like Macintosh or Red Delicious, this could be a wonderful thing.) As if you didn’t need another reason to visit, they also have fresh-pressed cider, pumpkins, squash, juices, specialty preserves, and other locally produced agricultural products. So if you were wondering where to go this fall to pick some delicious apples and sock up on all the fall fixings, I can’t think of a better place to do so than Blackman’s Homestead Farm!
Fright Fest
Six Flags Darien Lake Fright Fest is Halloween fun at its best
With the fall months comes Halloween. A time where people are suddenly obsessed with getting as scared as they possibly can. Well, if you’re one of those great many that enjoy the tantalizing thrill of being scared to the point of perhaps getting a heart attack, (I don’t know why you’d find that appealing, but who am I to judge?) then I have good news for you because Six Flag Darien Lake’s Fright Fest is back, and they’ll have enough zombies, ghouls, and monsters ready to chase you around the park to the point you’ll get tired (or start to spontaneously cry out of fear. Hey, this is what you wanted, so don’t get mad at me when you start crying the River Jordon because the guy with a ski mask and a chainsaw is inching closer by the second).
If you’re in the mood for this particular kind of fun, you’re sure to get your fill if you decide to go to Fright Fest (maybe think about bringing an extra pair of clothes though that’s all I’m saying).
Eternal Flame Trail
Hike to see the Eternal Flame in Orchard Park
The Eternal Flame Falls Trail is a 1.4 mile heavily trafficked out and back trail located near Orchard Park that features a waterfall and an ever-present flame radiating from within the trail (don’t ask me where because I don’t know its exact location, but trust me this isn’t a case of false advertising). Make sure to bring proper footwear because the trail can get muddy and slippery. Still, it’s more than worth it on account of the trail being absolutely beautiful during the fall season! So if you’re looking for a bit of a different trail to traverse and find a cool natural wonder hidden away in it while you make your way through admiring all the glorious beauty the fall season has to offer while doing so, give the Eternal Flame Trail a shot!
Go To A Bills Game At Highmark Stadium!
There was a time in my life where I would have never thought to list going to a Bills game as a fun fall activity (primarily because growing up, they always lost). But THIS IS NOW, and the Buffalo Bills are truly a force to be reckoned with. (Did you see that last game? Sheesh, we looked good!) So how about going to one of the home games this fall and showing the Bills some love?
A Fresh Start
Fall is a wonderful time of year because it really showcases the beauty of change. Leaves of all shapes and colors gently loft to the ground so new ones can take their place. A variety of different fruits and vegetables hit their peak and are ready to be plucked and served. And with the last vestiges of good weather among us before wintertime hits, people prepare fun and interesting activities as a means to make the most of the good weather.
So if you’re wondering what exactly to do with your time during this spring season, I hope this piece at the very least gave you a few ideas so you don’t just sit at home and drink apple cider (which you can most certainly do, but if that’s all you decide to do you’ll be missing out on a lot of the wonderful things the fall season in the Buffalo Niagara area has to offer… apple picking, cool trail frights and Bills games, and that’s not even the half of it!
