No matter where you get your pumpkins this season, make sure to do something creative with them or at the very least make good use of them.

Few things invoke the Fall spirit more than prowling the patch for the perfect pumpkins

The Magical Fruit

Well friends, it’s getting dangerously close to that time of the year where pumpkin stuff is all the rage! Before too long you’ll be fighting a horde of caffeine-deprived patrons in just about every Starbucks you go to because PUMPKIN SPICE IS NOW AVAILABLE (which I don’t get. It tastes like pumpkin and it’s spicy… doesn’t seem all that special to me). Not to mention all the pumpkin-related snacks and treats that will soon flood every checkout counter you come across. But what about the pumpkin itself? You know, the big orange squash that comes every Halloween and gets violently carved so kids and adults alike can show off their best joker smile or whatever their creative fancy leads them to.

Yes, the pumpkin is a wonderful fruit (yes, it actually is one because it has seeds, trust me, I looked it up) that’s very versatile. Everything from its seeds to its hollowed shell can be used for something culinary or creative. So, let’s look into some of the best places to get pumpkins in Buffalo Niagara so when it’s truly pumpkin season, you’ll already be one step ahead of the game.

The Great Pumpkin Farm

The Great Pumpkin Farm, where the Cucurbitaceae fam congregate to praise the rainbow gods

The Great Pumpkin Farm first started in 1996 as a means to showcase how great pumpkins and the pumpkin season is. That year they hosted the World Pumpkin Weigh-off and one of their pumpkins ended up in the Guinness World Book of Records for the first 1,000-pound pumpkin!  From there the Festival grew and grew, adding more activities and ways to appreciate all things fall. It is now one of Western New York’s signature fall events and an annual destination for thousands of families. From comedy to magic shows, fun mazes, and even pie-eating contests (pumpkin pie, of course), if you love pumpkin season, this is a place you simply have to visit.

The Pumpkin Patch

The Pumpkin Patch

If you like to get pumpkins from a place that makes you feel like you are out in the country, check out The Pumpkin Patch. It’s no-frills but in the best kind of way. There are no actives or any of the like. It’s just friendly customer service and more pumpkins of every shape, size, and color than you could possibly imagine. So, if you like the idea of going to a genuine honest to goodness pumpkin farm to get your pumpkins, I can’t think of a better place!

Badding Bros Farm Market and Garden Center

Badding Bros Farm Market and Garden Center

Normally, Badding Bros is your one-stop-shop for flowers and produce of any kind you can think of, but during pumpkin season it’s also your one stop shop to get that lovely orange squash. Grab a wagon (yes, a wagon, that’s how good their selection is. They expect you to get something big and beautiful, or so many wonderful small ones that you can’t carry them by hand) and pick out your perfect pumpkin, warty, blue, or striped. They have so many unique options to delight everyone in the family. Make sure that whatever pumpkins you get are more than enough to handle any festivities you may have planned for it.

Cambria Corn Maze

Cambria Corn Maze

As stated on their website, the mission of the Cambria Corn Maze is to “get the word out about the importance of farming and agriculture.” So, besides the fact of getting some top-notch pumpkins that’ll have everyone in the neighborhood envious, you’ll get the chance to learn about growing food (possibly even pumpkin. I’m not the program coordinator at the place so don’t get mad at me if when you go they teach you about growing corn instead of pumpkins) and all that entails like: what conditions are best for the particular subject, what soil, how much sunlight, what soil or mulch is best. All in all, the idea of coming for a great selection of pumpkins and leaving with not only a wonderful pumpkin but a wealth of farming and agricultural knowledge as well seems like a pretty sweet deal to me.

Spoth’s Farm Market

Spoth’s Farm Market

Spoth’s is a third-generation, family-owned and operated farm market focusing on bringing your family the freshest locally grown goods and produce. So, if you’re looking to buy your pumpkins from a real homegrown family-enterprise that really knows what they’re talking about and can accurately answer and explain whatever questions or concerns you may have during the pumpkin season, Spoth’s should definitely be on your radar.

The Mascot of the Season

Pumpkins are great. Beyond being one of the most versatile fruits around, they’re just great to see. Pumpkins are pretty much the official symbol for Halloween and fall. They represent a time for fun, for laughs, for harmless tricks, and plentiful candy. Seeing a pumpkin during this time of year is liable to put a smile on the young as well as the young at heart. So, no matter where you get your pumpkins this season, make sure to do something creative with them or at the very least make good use of them.

Remember, if you carve a smile on a pumpkin, chances are you’ll get one in return.
