The sun is finally starting to poke out and with warmer temps comes the desire to be more active. From half marathons to miles, there are races happening all over Western New York. But the fun doesn’t stop at the finish line! These races have parties afterwards that make running worth it.
Cinco De Mayo Run (May 6th)
LOCKPORT — Davison Road Inn, 383 Davison Road, Lockport NY 14094. The 5K starts at noon. Registration opens at 10:30 AM. This is “Nacho” Ordinary 5k Buffalo Niagara! Registration includes an after party in Cinco De Mayo style featuring complimentary margaritas. You’ll also walk away with a complimentary pint glass. Happy Half (May 12th)
ELLICOTTVILLE — Holiday Valley Resort, 6557 Holiday Valley Rd, Ellicottville, New York 14731. This running event has something for everyone! The day will feature a Half Marathon, 5k, and a Beer Mile for those with iron stomachs. If you’re more of a drinker and less of a runner, try the Beer Run! Drink a beer, run a quarter mile. Drink a beer, run a quarter mile. Drink a beer, run a quarter mile. Drink a beer, run a quarter mile. Four beers, one mile. You got it? Mother’s Day Breast Cancer Pink Dress Run (May 13th)
This is a race that benefits an amazing cause. The walk is one of the legacies of Mary Marvin, who started the Mother’s Day Breast Cancer Canal Walk in 1996, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Donations from the walk will fund Mary’s Wig Room at our local American Cancer Society Office. There will also be a raffle post race with five chances to win so not only will you be supporting a good cause but you could walk away with some cash for yourself too. Whether you’re walking or running in the 5k you’ll be supporting a great cause. Register for this race here.
Gay 5k Run (May 31st)
Larkin Square 745 Seneca St Buffalo, NY US 14210. Show your pride with every stride! As someone who only runs when being chased I never dreamed I’d be doing a 5k, but this one looks so fun I had to sign up! Deemed the most fabulous race in Buffalo this race this race is for everyone. Also, there’s a huge party at Larkin Square after the race that I’m sure won’t disappoint. There will be prizes for the fastest runners and for Most Pride. Sea Lion 5k (June 9th)
Aquarium of Niagara, 701 Whirlpool St, Niagara Falls NY 14301. Run through the NYS Parks to benefit rescued seals and sea lions at the Aquarium of Niagara. With free Aquarium admission and an after party complete with snacks and music there’s fun to be had for everyone. The top male and female will win a Sea Lion Encounter, and the top racers in their age groups will receive a painting done by one of our sea lions, Mia, Copper or Kiah!
